The top mobile network in SA in 2022.
Article Written by Kgati Mogashoa 02 April 2023.
According to the annual Mobile Network Quality Report from MyBroadband Insights, MTN has been named the finest mobile network in South Africa for 2022. MTN was ranked as the best network in the study's analysis of all major South African metropolises, including Tshwane, Cape Town, Johannesburg, eThekwini, Mangaung, Nelson Mandela Bay, and Ekurhuleni. Based on 1.36 million data from the Android Speed Test App from MyBroadband that were collected between January 1 and December 31, 2022. According to the report, South Africa's average mobile download speed in 2017 was 49.19 Mbit/s, while the average upload speed was 14.15 Mbit/s. The average mobile download speed and upload speed for South Africa were both higher than they were in 2021, when they were respectively 40.86 Mbit/s and 13.82 Mbit/s.
MTN dominance continues
MTN had the fastest average download speed, clocking in at 68.84 Mbit/s, ahead of Vodacom (48.58 Mbit/s), Telkom (28.54 Mbit/s), and Cell C (23.41 Mbit/s). Rain had the slowest average download speed, clocking in at 15.14 Mbit/s. "Due to outspending its competitors on infrastructure investments over the previous five years, MTN has performed exceptionally well. But, over the past two years, Vodacom has begun to spend more than MTN, and this has begun to reflect in the most recent results "Regarding the study, MyBroadband Insights released a comment. Moreover, MTN won both the MyBroadband Insights 2020 and 2021 Mobile Network Quality Reports. By 2022, MTN's average download speed had increased to 68.84 Mbit/s from 64.23 Mbit/s in 2021. However, the operator's overall upload speed decreased in 2022 from 22.09 Mbit/s to 19.77 Mbit/s.
